What a Pig Island Tour Includes, Stop by Stop

A Pig Island tour from Koh Samui is a half day built around two islands: a van to the south coast, a boat crossing of 15 to 30 minutes, snorkelling at Koh Tan, and free time on Koh Madsum (Ko Mat Sum), the island called Pig Island. Door to door it takes 4 to 7 hours by boat. The short answer

Expect the same two stops on nearly every trip, in either order: a reef at Koh Tan for snorkelling, and a beach on Koh Madsum for swimming, photos and the pigs. What changes from one trip to the next is the boat, how long you get on each island, whether a meal is included, and whether the Pig Island fee is in the price. Read those four lines before you compare prices.

The half day, stop by stop

The van. Most trips collect you from your hotel and drive to the south coast; the vans allow 40 minutes to an hour each way, because they stop at several hotels. By road, without traffic, Thong Krut pier is 14 km from Lamai and 23 km from Chaweng.

The crossing. From Thong Krut, Koh Tan is 5.1 km and Koh Madsum 5.8 km in a straight line, and the two islands are 3.6 km apart. The boat legs take 15 to 30 minutes on the trips from the south coast; Highsea Tour's teak cruise sails about an hour each way from Nathon Pier, and TripGuru Thailand's day spends 4 to 5 hours on the boat.

Koh Tan. The snorkel stop, 45 minutes to an hour on most trips, with snorkelling gear provided, and life jackets on all but two trips. It depends on the sea: when it is too rough, some trips give you more time on Pig Island instead. Koh Tan snorkelling covers the reef.

Koh Madsum. Free time on the beach: an hour on Happy Samui's speedboat, 2 hours on Mr.O Samui City Tour's longtail day, about 2.5 hours on Angthong Sea Tour's Pig Island speedboat. Lunch and back. Some trips serve lunch on Koh Tan or on the beach, some on board, and some leave you to buy your own; then the boat and the van back.

The fee and the extras, in each trip’s terms

No authority publishes an entrance fee for Koh Madsum. Where a trip leaves it out, it puts the figure at 50 THB a person, and the jet ski safari lets children under 8 in free; where a trip includes it, the fee is settled at booking. Two charges are easy to miss: Oh-Hoo's speedboat with lunch adds 700 baht a person each way for pickups in Nathon, Taling Ngam, Pagka (Phang Ka), Lipa Noi or Lipa Yai, and Discover Thailand's private longtail has no hotel pickup at all. On Happy Samui’s speedboat, children over 120 cm pay the adult price.

What to bring

Swimwear, a towel (the jet ski safari does not supply one), a change of clothes, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and cash in baht for the island fee and anything you buy on the islands. The jet ski safari asks drivers for a passport or ID card, and Angthong Sea Tour’s trips ask for your passport number for the insurance.
