Pig Island Without a Tour: How to Get There, What It Costs

Pig Island (Koh Madsum) without a tour: the drive to Thong Krut pier, boats and fares, the 50 THB island fee and the cheapest bookable trips (November 2026).

Updated November 2026

There is no way to Pig Island without a boat: Koh Madsum (Ko Mat Sum) is 5.8 km in a straight line off Thong Krut pier on the south coast of Koh Samui. No authority posts a fare for that crossing, and none publishes an entrance fee for the island either; what you pay depends on who takes you. The lowest price among the trips carded here is Mr.O Samui City Tour’s Koh Samui: Pig Island & Koh Tan Snorkeling w/Viewpoint Hike, from $26 on promotion, usually $38 a person (checked November 2026), with hotel transfers, the longtail from Thong Krut Pier and the entrance fee to the islands in the price.

The short answer

You can get yourself to the pier, but not across the water: someone has to take you. Going on your own means reaching Thong Krut, finding a boat, paying whatever its operator charges, then paying any island fee on arrival. A shared tour settles the van, the boat and, on some trips, the fee at booking, and the cheapest of them is a known price before you leave your hotel. A private boat for two is the closest thing to going on your own.

Going on your own: the drive to the pier

The drive to Thong Krut pier, routed without traffic from the village centres: Nathon 14 km, Lamai 14 km, Chaweng 23 km, Bophut 27 km.

Thong Krut is on the south coast, and most hotels are not. By road, routed without traffic from each village centre to the pier, it is 14 km from Nathon (about 15 minutes), 14 km from Lamai (about 17 minutes), 23 km from Chaweng (about 25 minutes) and 27 km from Bophut (about 28 minutes); from Samui airport it is about 28 km, around 31 minutes. Traffic adds to all of these, which is why the tours’ own vans allow 40 minutes to an hour each way.

Going on your own: the boat and the fee

Longtails to Koh Madsum and Koh Tan go from Thong Krut, and so do several of the trips carded here. No official or posted fare for the crossing is published (as of November 2026): the operators who sell a private longtail from Thong Krut set their own prices, and those differ from one seller to the next. On the trips that start at Thong Krut, the boat leg to the first island takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Map of the boat legs from Thong Krut pier: to Koh Tan 5.1 km, to Koh Madsum (Pig Island) 5.8 km, and Koh Tan to Koh Madsum 3.6 km, all in a straight line, with Koh Rap to the south
From Thong Krut pier: 5.1 km to Koh Tan, 5.8 km to Koh Madsum (Pig Island), and 3.6 km between the two, all in a straight line.

The island fee works the same way: no authority publishes one. The trips that leave it out of their price put it at 50 THB a person, so carry that much in cash for everyone in your group. Plan food and water too: Discover Thailand's private longtail does not allow outside food or drinks on Pig Island, not even the water from its own boat, and Oh-Hoo's private longtail points its guests to a local bar on the island that sells food and drinks.

What the cheapest trips add

Mr.O Samui City Tour's longtail day picks you up at your hotel and drives you to Thong Krut Pier, about an hour each way, then takes you by longtail to Ko Mat Sum for 2 hours of free time and on to Ko Taen for 45 minutes of snorkelling; the two islands can come in either order. The price includes a licensed guide, snorkel gear, a life jacket, drinking water, insurance and the entrance fee to the islands, and there is an optional hike to a viewpoint. Meals are not included and can be bought on site. It is 6 hours in all, and not suitable for pregnant women, wheelchair users, people with mobility impairments or anyone prone to seasickness.

The nearest thing to going on your own is a private longtail. Discover Thailand's private longtail is from $98 on promotion, usually $103 for a group of up to 2 (checked November 2026), 4 hours with a local captain who speaks basic English, Koh Tan snorkelling when the sea allows, and Koh Madsum. It has no hotel pickup, the Koh Mat Sum entry fee of 50 THB a person is extra, and children count in the group total. The boat is yours between the islands, but it carries other people while you are on Pig Island, so leave nothing on board.
