The short answer

Book the jet ski if there are one or two of you, the driver is 18 or over, and the point of the trip is the ride itself: the guides ride their own jet skis, there is a safety briefing first, and no experience is needed. Book a boat if anyone in the group is a child under 4, prone to seasickness or has a heart condition, if you want lunch on an island, or if you are three or more and the per-jet-ski price adds up. Pregnant women are listed as not suitable on every trip in the table below, jet ski or boat, except the electric longtail, whose exclusions are non-swimmers and people prone to seasickness. The jet ski: what the per-jet-ski price means

On both jet ski tours one booking is one jet ski, and up to two people ride it. Two riders sharing a jet ski pay one price between them; two people who each want a jet ski pay twice. On the jet ski safari the driver must be at least 18 and show a copy of an ID or passport, a jet ski carries up to 200 kg, children under 18 ride with an adult, and the group is at most six jet skis. Who should take a boat instead

The jet ski safari is not suitable for children under 4, pregnant women, people with heart problems or other medical conditions, wheelchair users or anyone prone to seasickness. The VIP jet ski tour adds people with back problems or mobility impairments, and non-swimmers. If bad weather starts during the jet ski safari, the ride can be shortened or a stop skipped with no refund. On a boat, nobody has to steer, there is room for bags, and most trips include a meal.

Which boat

A speedboat is the common choice: Happy Samui's speedboat half day spends an hour on Koh Madsum with a guide, then snorkels and has a buffet lunch on Koh Tan, about 5 hours with hotel transfers, and Angthong Sea Tour's speedboat leaves from its pier on Bangkao Beach with a lunch or dinner included. A longtail is slower and simpler: Mr.O Samui City Tour's longtail day has the lowest from-price here and includes the entrance fee to the islands, and SOUTHEAST ASIA CO.,LTD.'s electric longtail has a captain but no guide. For more room, Ocean King Samui Catamaran Co,Ldt's speed catamaran has a water slide, paddle boards and a light meal on board, and Highsea Tour's teak cruise sails from Nathon Pier on the west coast with two bathrooms on board. It carries a wheelchair-accessible badge, yet people with mobility impairments are listed as not suitable, so ask before booking.
